Screening for Spousal or Partner Abuse in a Community Health Setting

Abstract
The most frequent victims of domestic violence are women. Although estimates of spousal or partner abuse vary from 3.8% to 44%, this type of abuse is unrecognized and underreported. A screening study for abuse occurred in a community health setting. Some 2,410 women were screened. The results indicated an incidence rate of 8.4%. Health care providers have an obligation to identify, treat, and provide appropriate resources for victims of spousal abuse. Screening for spousal or partner abuse should take place in primary care settings.
