Abstract
The author shows that in three dimensions the consideration of single-spin distributions containing a factor of exp( lambda s6) can lead to statistical mechanical models of dramatically different character from those defined by the usual field theory picture of the renormalisation group theory of critical phenomena. These models plainly fall outside the usual, and previously expected, universality class. Keywords
