Genetically Significant Dose to the United States Population from Diagnostic Medical Roentgenology, 1964

Abstract
The GSD for the United States population (1964) was 55 millirads. This value is compared with estimates from other countries and with natural background. Ninety per cent of the total genetically significant dose results from examinations of the abdomen and pelvis, 82% was contributed by examinations of males, only 4% was contributed by fluoroscopic examinations. Beam size was frequently greater than film size. If colimation were used to limit beam size to film size in the plane of the film, the GSD would be reduced from 55 to 19 millirads.
