Abstract
Stable anhydrous molecular formaldehyde solutions of controlled concentration (0.5M to 3.0M) in tetrahydrofuran have been prepared as an efficient synthetic reagent for hydroxymethylation. This solution has been demonstrated to be a superior reagent for the addition of one carbon to metalated alkylpyridazines in the first synthesis of 4-(ß-hydroxyethyl)-pyridazine and an improved synthesis of 3-(ß-hydroxyethyl)-pyridazine.Keywords
