Oxygen Consumption by Normal and Diabetic Rat and Human Corneas

Abstract
The effects of diabetes on rat and human corneal oxygen consumption and glucose uptake by rat corneas were examined. A definite decline in whole corneal oxygen consumption, in diabetic rats and humans, demonstrated that corneal metabolism is abnormal in this disorder. Additionally, it was found that insulin significantly decreased the rates of oxygen consumption and glucose uptake by normal corneas and the corneal epithelium appears to be selectively effected by the hormone.
