Promising control of the symphylid Scutigerella immaculata has been obtained by use of DDT dust (3% Geigy) as a seed treatment. Beans (Bountiful var.) were treated with the DDT dust at the rate of 4 ounces per 5 ounces of seed. Both seed and DDT were drilled into the soil with a seed drill. Symphylid populations were greatly reduced in the treated plots and a normal yield of beans was obtained. Prelim. tests have indicated that symphylids will die in approx. 3 hours after having been contacted with the DDT dust. Broadcasting of the 3% DDT dust and rototilling it into the soil at the rates of 145, 220 and 366 lb. per acre did not reduce symphylid populations.
