Abstract
An expression for the mutual diffusion coefficient of a solute consistent with irreversible thermodynamics is compared with expressions obtained by other methods. The results of experiments on protein solutions and nearly ordered bead solutions are compared with theory. It is argued that for small wave vectors the bead experiments are dominated by effects of polydispersity. Keywords
