Abstract
By extension of the theorem of Miles (1961), it is shown that inviscid wave-CISK models can only give amplifying forced linear perturbations of a stratified sheared flow which travel faster than the mean flow speed at all levels if the heating is out of phase with the vertical velocity; a physical interpretation is given.
