Abstract
In a sample of affluent manual and routine white-collar workers it was found that the answers to a series of questions on conjugal roles were not related in such a way as to suggest the presence of an underlying dimension of jointness/segregation. This could be accounted for in various ways: the special characteristics of the sample, discrepancies between norms and reported behaviour, or inadequacies in the questions asked. It is concluded that further research is needed, but that until this has been done the universal existence of jointness/segregation of conjugal roles as a general dimension summarizing discrete items of behaviour must be doubted. Some conclusions on method are drawn. Keywords
