Abstract
PROPONENTS of Initiative 119 in the state of Washington have gathered more than the 150,000 signatures required to put the initiative on the ballot in November 1991.1 The measure would amend the state's natural-death act to permit "physician aid in dying," defined as "a medical service provided in person by a physician that will end the life of a conscious and mentally competent qualified person in a dignified, painless and humane manner, when requested voluntarily by the patient through a written directive executed at the time the service is desired."
