Abstract
Chronic idiopathic hypoparathyroidism is a disease identical with postoperative hypoparathyroidism but the agent interfering with parathyroid function has not been established. The disease usually starts in childhood or adolescence and, if not then, not until the 4th decade; its start may be closely related to acute infections. The possibility of some bacterial or virus infection injuring the glands is discussed. In the one case autopsied, fatty replacement of the parathyroid epithelial cells was found. This was distinguished from what Herxheimer calls lipo-matosis of the parathyroids. Keywords
