Glucose-6-Phosphate Phosphohydrolase Activity in Erythrocytes of Cancer Patients and Blood, Liver, and Brain of Tumor-Bearing Rats

Abstract
Glucose-6-phosphate phosphchydrolcse (G-6-Pase) activity in the red blood cells, liver, and brain of rats bearing experimental Guerin tumors was investigated. G-6-Pase activity decreased in all the tissues from tumor-bearing animals compared to the level of activity found in normal rat tissues. A low G-6-Pase activity was noted in red blood cells of 19 patients with various forms of cancer, as compared to the activity in healthy subjects. G-6-Pase activity was particularly low in patients with cancer of the cervix uteri and uterine body. No significant alterations were found in G-6-Pase activity in the erythrocytes of patients with non-neoplastic disease.
