Abstract
‘Urban ecology’ has received considerable attention both in the media and at research level in recent years. The rapid evolution of this readily accessible branch of ecology has, in turn, led to some uncertainty about content and emphasis. Problems have thereby been encountered in attempting to delimit this essentially environmental study. A brief review of the development of ecology in general, and urban ecology in particular, serves to shed some light on the changing scope of the subject.
