Abstract
A Kirghiz social scientist investigates the causes of armed conflict between Uzbeks and Kirghiz in Kyrgyzstan's Osh Oblast in June 1990, in which over 200 people perished. The basic survey tool is a questionnaire sent to a broad spectrum of oblast leaders and experts. Results refute earlier-held official views of religious fundamentalism and repressed language-cultural rights as responsible. Rather, blame is placed on pronounced occupational segregation, real or perceived unemployment, and an acute housing shortage and actions of oblast authorities. Uzbek and Kirghiz experts assigned substantially different weights to various factors. Translated by Edward Torrey, Alexandria, VA 22308.Keywords
