Abstract
Press juices were prepared from the leaves of potato plants, and the protein components examined by paper electro-phoresis. Whereas 7 components were recognisable after staining with benzidine in the extracts from healthy leaves, 8 components were detected in extracts from plants infected with leaf-roll. The 8th component was found regularly in infected material: however this diagnosis was of little practical importance since the component appears only when the diseased state of the plant can be readily detected by inspection. The new component was isolated by preparative paper electrophoresis. It was found to be a phosphorus containing peptide; the constituent amino acids were aspartic acid, glycine, glutamic acid, threonine, alanine, valine, leucine and methionine. Glycine was shown to be the amino-terminal amino acid.
