Abstract
The effects of alcoholism treatment were examined in 67 physicians having a mean age of 47 and an average of 14 yr of problem drinking. One year after discharge from treatment each physician was sent a questionnaire containing items about drinking, drug use, general physical health, self-image, professional performance and personal adjustments. To corroborate the physicians'' responses, questionnaires were also sent to concerned persons, each being a person close enough to a patient to know about his posttreatment drinking and drug use. Of the physicians, 51 had been abstinent since discharge, one reported light or moderate drinking and only 5 reported alcohol misuse. There were also improvements in the other 5 areas covered by the questionnaire. The high degree of agreement between the questionnaire responses of patients and concerned persons is said to indicate that the self-report questionnaires obtain valid information about the outcome of alcoholism treatment at 1 yr following discharge. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
