Optical Properties of Anodic-Oxide Interference Films on Uranium Immersed in Refractive Media*

Abstract
The spectrophotometry of anodically formed oxide films on uranium metal immersed in refractive media is discussed in terms of the vector addition of the wave components. Immersion alters the optics by decreasing the amplitude of the wave vector reflected at the medium-film interface. Diminution of the transmitted wave vector through absorption by the film in the near ultraviolet also has a decisive effect upon the wavelength dependence of the optics on immersion. By means of immersion spectrophotometry, (1) the relative magnitudes of the component wave vectors were determined, (2) the refractive index of the film was obtained by extrapolation to zero interference, and (3) the extinction coefficient was determined as a function of wavelength.
