Sterility of Some Interspecific Allium Hybrids1

Abstract
Seed set on the interspecific hybrids Allium cepa X A. galanthum and A. cepa X A. pskemense was very low, generally less than 0.5% of the theoretical maximum 6 germinative seeds per flower, compared with the set on the species which ranged from about 20% to 50% after open pollination. Allium cepa cannot therefore be said to be freely interfertile with either A. galanthum or A. pskemense. Although most of the progeny of open-pollinated F1’s as sterile as the F1’s themselves, a few plants showed were slightly improved fertility.
