Water intoxication following intracranial surgery

Abstract
Susceptibility to water intoxication was determined in 10 neurosurgical patients studied during the postoperative period. Salt-free fluids were administered. Severe intoxication was seen in 4 patients, while 3 others had mild symptoms of hypotonicity. The pathogenesis of this disorder is discussed. The factors which are probably responsible for its occurrence in neurosurgical patients are presented. The syndrome may be easily confused with postoperative intracranial hematoma. The means of prevention and treatment, mainly by salt administration, are described.
