Abstract
It is a feature of many atomic diffusion jump mechanisms that successive jumps of an atom are “correlated” in the sense that the direction of a jump is not completely at random but is influenced to some extent by the direction of the preceding jump or jumps. General formulae are derived for the diffusion coefficient which take account of this correlation. The theory is applied to a calculation of the diffusion coefficient of solute atoms by the Johnson mechanism. Keywords
