Abstract
Studies of the effects of nutrition on pregnancy and early childhood growth and development have shown that proper nutritional intake results in a marked improvement in health.1 , 2 Both the course of pregnancy and the condition of the infant at birth are affected by the mother's diet, and normal growth and development of young children are also dependent upon the quantity and quality of their diet.In recognition of the important role that nutrition has in the health of young children and pregnant women, Congress in 1972 enacted legislation creating a major nutritional intervention program.
