The effect on germination of seed (Mitchella repens and Celastrus scandens) of light and of nipping the seed coat through to the endosperm is discussed. Light is considered beneficial when more germinate in the light; darkness when 5% more germinate in the dark. Light has no beneficial effect if the average germinations in light and darkness are within 5% and within 20% in an individual experiment.
