Blood Concentrations following Local Application of Sulphonamide Compounds to Wounds

Abstract
Estimations of the compds. in the blood were made by the method of Marshall and Litchfield (Science 88: 85, 1938). The conc. of the drugs in the blood was rarely above 1.5 mg. per 100 cc, and usually it was <0.5 mg. per 100 cc. Local treatment can, therefore, be safely reinforced by oral treatment when desirable. Sulfanilamide and sulfathiazole were chiefly used. The estimations were made on war casualty cases with open wounds and compound fractures, suppurating sinuses and varicose vein ulcers which were treated by local applications (up to 5 g.) of either sulfanilamide or sulfathiazole.
