Abstract
An extensive intelligence system throughout Great Brit., based on reports of naturalists, farmers, estate owners, and institutions, shows that maximum yrs. for field voles (Microtus agrestis and M. hirtus) occur with a regular periodicity of approximately 4 yrs. The cause of this cycle is not fully understood, but it is suggested that disease is the controlling factor in some instances, while climatic conditions (long spells of frost on exposed ground) play an important part. Carnivorous enemies do not play a major role, but may keep the vole population below critical plague numbers. It is suggested that detailed observations from various areas, with complete climatological data, should make the forecasting of future maxima[long dash]of considerable direct value to forestry[long dash]possible. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
