The Products of the Anodic Oxidation of an Iron Electrode in Alkaline Solution

Abstract
X‐ray diffraction patterns have been recorded of the surface of an activated iron electrode during anodic oxidation in . At the end of the first plateau (−0.8V relative to a reference electrode), only and are detected. At the end of the second plateau (0.0V), and are detected on the first discharge. On subsequent discharges, a gradual conversion to and is observed. In saturated with , and are detected at the end of the second plateau on the first and subsequent cycles.
