Complex Frequency Perturbation of a Microwave Cavity Containing a Lossy Liquid*

Abstract
Theoretical calculations for a resonant cavity loaded with a lossy liquid contained in a glass tube were made. Dielectric losses were introduced in calculations which give theoretical variations of the resonance frequency and the Q factor with the sample and the container characteristics. Application to the case of a liquid sample whose tan δ varies from 0 to 0.5 confirms that the influence of the imaginary part of the permittivity (ε1”)on the measurement of the real part (ε1’) is smaller than 1%.
