Brownfield Woods, Illinois: Woody Vegetation and Changes Since 1960

Abstract
The 3rd 100% inventory of Brownfield Woods in Champaign County, Illinois [USA] was completed in 1975. These periodic inventories demonstrate that the woodland is a dynamic, changing community. Pioneer oaks, primarily bur and chinkapin (Quercus macrocarpa Michx and Q. muehlenbergii), which previously dominated the community, are gradually being replaced by maple, buckeye and elm. Sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.) is currently dominant in the woodland and should remain so due to the large proportion of maples in the seedling and sapling stages of the community.
