Abstract
Numerical simulations of penetration processes in HY100 steel plates were performed in this study. The penetrators were made of maraging steel rods and the impact velocity ranges from 78-400 m/s. Experimental evidence shows that the dominant mode of failure in HY100 steel plates is shear induced plugging. By using a maximum equivalent plastic strain failure criterion and the element deletion capability in the transient dynamic finite element PRONTO 2D code, shear plugging was successfully simulated. Quantita tively, calculated residue velocity of the penetrator and the plug velocity agree well with measured data. This investigation provides credence to the finite element technique that it is a viable tool for the analysis of this class of problems. Keywords
