Abstract
The spectrum of the fluctuations of the energy dissipation rate is found to exhibit remarkable changes at bifurcations of chaos such as the band merging crisis. The energy dissipation decreases as chaos develpes. A truncated dissipation rate for the Poincaré map is shown to reproduce the qualitative features of energy dissipation. Keywords
