Abstract
In April, 1970 the Commissioner of Food and Drug established a Task Force of Scientists to undertake a comprehensive review of the use of antibiotic and sulfonamide drugs in animal feeds. The scientists included 10 specialists on infectious diseases and animal science from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the National Center for Disease Control, and five consultants from universities and industry. The Task Force was established on the recommendation of the FDA Science Advisory Committee following their review of a report known as the Swann Committee Report, issued by the Government of Great Britain setting forth the potential human health hazard from the use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine and animal husbandry. Also, it is estimated that 70 to 80% of all food-producing animals in the United States receive one or more drugs in their feed sometime during their life span leading to considerable human health concern in this country.
