Abstract
Infrared absorption by small needle-shaped ionic crystals of cubic structure has recently been found to be anisotropic. In this note, a single strand is used as a limiting model for such a crystal, and the calculated absorption in both directions is shown to be in qualitative agreement with observations on lithium fluoride. Features of absorptions to be expected from other crystals are discussed. Keywords
