Abstract
To the Editor: After reading Dr. D. M. Taylor's article, "How Early is Early Surgery in the Management of Strabismus?" (Arch Ophthal 70:752-756, 1963), to which further attention was directed by a recent editorial in the JAMA (187: 298, 1964), I feel that a word of caution is in order in regard to Dr. Taylor's advice to the readers of both journals. While I agree with the author that it would be desirable to have the eyes straight as early as possible to permit simultaneous bifoveal stimulation, I would like to warn against general acceptance of Dr. Taylor's intemperate recommendations according to which surgery in congenital strabismus should be preferably performed between the ages of 6 and 12 months. Most surgeons will agree that the diagnosis has to come before the operation. However, an adequate diagnosis in a strabismic child who is less than a year old is not possible
