Plasma parameters in gas discharges for positive-column He–Se+ lasers

Abstract
Electron temperature and density in gas discharges used for positive‐column He–Se+ lasers measured with the probe method are described and compared with those for positive‐column He–Cd+ lasers. It is shown that the electron temperature in the positive‐column He–Se+ laser does not decrease very rapidly with increasing metal vapor pressure although it decreases significantly in the positive‐column He–Cd+ laser. The changes of the electron densities in the two also are different. The importance fo the charge‐exchange excitation mechanism and the difference of excitation mechanisms in the two are discussed.
