Abstract
We extend variational techniques previously described to study the two-dimensional massless free fermion field and the Thirring model on a spatial lattice. The iterative block spin procedure of constructing an effective lattice Hamiltonian, starting by dissecting the lattice into three-site blocks, is shown to be successful in producing results known for the continuum Thirring model. Keywords
