Abstract
A crossover study of the value of orally administered sodium bicarbonate in the prevention of infarctive crisis has been made in 18 children with sickle cell disease. Bicarbonate was given for 12 months of a two-year study period in a dose adjusted to maintain the urine either neutral or alkaline to litmus. There was no significant reduction in crisis frequency at a bicarbonate dose of 0.1 to 0.4 gm/kg of body weight per day; this contrasts with earlier claims, in uncontrolled studies, of the prophylactic value of oral sodium bicarbonate. Keywords
