Abstract
37 marathon runners were compared with 45 cross-country skiers on Cattell's 16 Personality Factor Inventory (16 PF) and 12 factors derived from the 16 PF. Both groups were similar on reserved, imaginative, self-sufficient, and independence factors on the 16 PF. Additional similarities were observed on creativity and scholastic potential of the derived factors. Marathoners appeared more intelligent and tough-minded on 16 PF and more subjective, creative, and scholastic on the derived factors than cross-country skiers. A stepwise multiple discriminant analysis (Rao's V criterion) used seven variables (intelligence, shy-venturesome, tenderminded-toughminded, forthright-astute, undisciplined-controlled, group dependent-self-sufficient, and expedient-conscientious) to classify correctly 73% ( n = 27) of the marathoners and 78% ( n = 35) of cross-country skiers. This accounted for 34.2% ( R2) of the variance. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
