Abstract
Although it is widely assumed that multiple personality disorder (MPD) originates in childhood and may exist in some form prior to adolescence, cases of MPD among children were not reported between 1840 and 1979. In this paper five contemporary cases of MPD in childhood are described. In all of these cases hypnosis was used, including that of a youngster who has sustained integration for over five years. These observations suggest that adult MPD may be prevented by the proper identification and early treatment of afflicted children.
