JOSEPHSON EFFECT IN MULTILAYER QUANTUM HALL SYSTEMS

Abstract
We study the Josephson effect in certain weakly linked multilayer quantum Hall (QH) states at filling factors ν=1, 1/3, 1/5, …. A Landau-Ginzburg-Chern-Simons approach is developed, in which the physics is described in terms of coherent interlayer tunneling of bosonized electrons in a way similar to the usual picture in terms of Cooper pair tunneling in the superconductor case. The observation of the Josephson current should constitute a direct experimental test of the widely believed existence of condensation of bosonized electrons in QH fluids.
