Abstract
A nonlinear theory determining the conditions of existence and the structure of the stationary striations generated in the ionospheric modifications by powerful radio waves is proposed. The structure of the density depletions and its characteristic length, width, and depth are shown to be in agreement with observations. A strong enhancement of the electron temperature inside the striations is predicted. Keywords
