Abstract
Workers of Formica polyctena Förster (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) follow artificial trails made with the contents of mandibular glands, poison glands, Dufour glands and rectal glands of their own species, as well as recruitment trails of Lasius fuliginosus (Latreille) or Myrmica ruginodis Nylander. Some specialized out-door workers prefer poison trails, as do workers irritated by a marking procedure. After withdrawal of sugared water the workers prefer rectal trails. Workers of hungry colonies also follow trails made with sugared water or faeces of tortricid larvae.
