Abstract
Of 499 administrative staff of not-for-profit nursing homes mailed questionnaires, 49 identified 103 autonomy-enhancing programs for the mentally impaired. The 103 programs were encompassed within six categories: special resident programming (43), structural and environmental adaptations (24), staff training (17), family programming (18), staff deployment (08), and ethics initiatives (13). These diverse programs reflect resolutions of issues in autonomy, particularly when denying immediate autonomy facilitates improvements in mental status and psychological functioning, resulting in long-range autonomy. Keywords
