Abstract
The role of food hypersensitivity in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis has been debated for years. One-hundred thirty-two children with severe atopic dermatitis were evaluated for food hypersensitivity using double-blind placebo-controlled oral food challenges. Fifty-nine percent of the children experienced at least one immediate hypersensitivity response. Definitive diagnosis of food allergy and initiation of an appropriate elimination diet resulted in significant clinical improvement in the majority of patients with atopic dermatitis and food hypersensitivity. Keywords
