Abstract
Recent research reveals a shift in emphasis from details of code to how speakers use messages to accomplish social purposes. One outgrowth of this trend is a communication functions approach to instruction. This approach provides opportunities for students to practice communication skills in exercise settings. A recommended sequence of activities for teachers is presented: observe patterns of child communication, isolate communication functions, design instructional objectives, design exercise materials. Keywords
