Abstract
The von Bertalanffy growth equation was used to fit a curve to the observed mean lengths of plaice during the 0- and I-group growth periods. The regression of growth increment per unit time on median length for time interval δt gave the best estimate of the growth parameters k, the slope, and Ln, the intercept value on the x axis. Ln is substituted for L to avoid confusion; n is the age of the fish in years at the end of the growth period. There is a short interval at the start of each growth period, when the growth rate is increasing, which is not adequately described by the von Bertalanffy equation. The method was used to describe the annual growth curve of 0- to I-group plaice and I- to IV-group brown trout.
