Abstract
A number of species of systemic smut fungi have been examined. Hyphae occupy inter- and intracellular positions in the host tissues. Intracellular hyphae resemble haustoria in many respects. Host plasmalemmae are invaginated by invading hyphae, and encapsulations are formed. Material of similar appearance to the host cell wall is deposited within encapsulations and many hyphae are eventually completely ensheathed. A possible mechanism for sheath formation is suggested. Keywords
