Abstract
It is shown experimentally that the geometry (i.e., the loop shape) of weftknitted fabrics is controlled by loop length, fibre type and properties, and method of relaxation. A theoretical study indicates that, for given end conditions, the shape taken up by a deformed elastic rod depends on the ratio of its flexural and torsional rigidities. The result is used to provide a tentative explanation of the experimental results. Keywords
