Delayed ileorectal anastomosis in the surgery of ulcerative colitis

Abstract
A series of cases is reported in which, in spite of contrary advice, ileorectal anastomosis has been successfully achieved. Eighty-five per cent of these patients have returned to a normal life. A plea is made for the retention of the rectum and restoration of continuity in most cases for which surgery is undertaken in ulcerative colitis.
