Abstract
The effect of adding 20 or 40 ppm monensin to a ground and pelleted diet on growth, carcass composition and feed efficiency was studied in 36 fattening young bulls. The diet contained a small proportion of cereals (13%) associated with soybean meal as a supplement to dehydrated lucerne (25%) and sugar beet pulp (50%). The young bulls receiving the monensin containing diet had a significantly lower feed intake than the controls. Their daily gains and their carcass composition were not significantly different. The feed efficiency of the diet was highly improved with increasing drug levels, i.e., by 7.5% with the diet containing 20 ppm monensin and by 15% with that containing 40 ppm monensin.
