Nationalistic Aspiration, Loyalty, and Internationalism

Abstract
The objective of this study was to establish whether nationalism, treated as a psychologi cal variable, is incompatible with certain aspects of 'internationalism'. Using question naire data from foreign students in the United States, nationalistic aspiration, attitude toward international cooperation, and relative loyalty to nation and various other groups were assessed. Results indicated that nationalism is not incompatible with an attitude favoring international cooperation, although those high in nationalism do tend to place national interest before world interests in their order of loyalty. It was also found that those placing world interests before national interests usually favored inter national cooperation, but the latter does not necessarily imply the former.
