An Astacene-Like Carotenoid from a Pacific Coast Anemone, Epiactis Prolifera

Abstract
This anemone owes its striking color to considerable quantities of a red acidic carotenoid, present entirely in the esterified condition. The animals contain also a trace of carotene and perhaps traces of an esterified xanthophyllic carotenoid. Both the free acid and its ester show a single absorption maximum at 5000 A in carbon disulphide. It is believed to be more similar to other similar acidic carotenoids described as occurring in other species of anemones than to the better known acidic carotenoid astacene.
